Zest Bar Cafe @ Glow Hotel, Penang

Henry Tan | 6:47 PM | | 1 Comment so far
Sawa dee ka ~ Yes, Thai food again :D ! Zest Bar Cafe at Glow Hotel Penang is now introducing their new Thai menu! Click here for our previous posts about Zest Bar Cafe =D

Zest Bar Cafe Thai Food!

Khun heeu kao mai (Are you hungry)? =D Let's start from the colourful traditional Thai snack Miang Kam. The name itself means eat things in one bite, it is reflected by the way of eating this dish, where you will wrap ingredients like betel leaves, coconut, dried shrimps, red onions, peanuts, ginger and chili in a leave, then dip in the sweet and salty sauce. Then of course you need to chew it in your mouth! :P We still find it interesting to eat these leaves with bare hand, although this wasn't our first time, this dish was a bit too spicy to our liking.

Zest Bar Cafe, Glow Hotel, Penang
Miang Kam – RM 8
We are not surprised that the common Thai appetizer Som Tam is serving at Zest Bar Cafe too. Som Tam or green papaya salad with dried shrimps and spices, is a crunchy delicious. This salad is low in calories and fat but rich in flavour, maybe that is why it is so popular among Thai women. Som Tam is always a good starter to kick start a Thai feast!

Zest Bar Cafe, Glow Hotel, Penang
Som Tam – RM 10
Another Thai appetizer option Yam Woon Sen is glass noodle salad with prawns, ginger flower and lime leaf. It is refreshing and light, many Thai people view this salad as a diet dish too, seems like eating Thai food could help in slimming down huh?

Zest Bar Cafe, Glow Hotel, Penang
Yam Woon Sen – RM 12
Talking about Thai soup, Tom Yam Goong will automatically pop out on my mind. Zest Bar Cafe's Tom Yam Goong is full of ingredients and the most eye-catching one would be the big fresh prawns! This is a classic clear Tom Yam soup with lemongrass and shrimps aroma, however we both were not impressed by their Tom Yam, as we feel something was missing there.

Zest Bar Cafe, Glow Hotel, Penang
Tom Yam Goong – RM 18
Tom Kha Gai or Siam Chicken Soup is cooked with galangal in coconut cream and local spices. This soup is something new to me, perhaps it is because I could always only see Tom Yam in the Thai menu, (it's like no matter how many gorgeous faces set upon your eyes, if you already have your heart set on someone, you will hardly notice anyone =P) Tom Kha Gai was rich in coconut cream aroma and the chicken was tender but still, I prefer Tom Yam! Okay, that's just my personal affection, you might like this, so do have a try kay =D

Zest Bar Cafe, Glow Hotel, Penang
Tom Kha Gai – RM 12
Zest Bar Cafe's Pad Thai or wok fried Thai noodle is cooked with prawns and bean curds presented in Pattaya style wrapping with egg. You could mix it together with roasted peanuts and beansprouts, and touch-up with the squeeze of lime juice.

Zest Bar Cafe, Glow Hotel, Penang
Pad Thai – RM 15
Kaeng Phet is spicy red curry with vegetables, you could choose from either prawn or chicken for this curry, it is paired with steamed rice. If you like spicy stuffs, you could give this a try.

Zest Bar Cafe, Glow Hotel, Penang
Kaeng Phet – RM 18
Gaeng Massaman is chicken or beef cooked with rich roasted peanut curry sauce and potato cubes, it comes with steamed rice too. Massaman actually means Muslim, maybe that's why I find the taste of this curry quite similar to Malaysian curry, just this with added roasted peanuts which I think is a good idea. This curry is rich in flavour yet relatively mild.

Zest Bar Cafe, Glow Hotel, Penang
Gaeng Massaman – RM 18
Their Gaeng Keow Wan or Thai Green Curry is the spiciest I ever tasted! I would prefer the mild version, and personally I think as compared to broccoli, eggplant is still the perfect match for Thai Green Curry. Here you have the option of either chicken or prawn, we had chicken green curry that day, it is served with steamed rice as well.

Zest Bar Cafe, Glow Hotel, Penang
Gaeng Keow Wan – RM 18
Pad Kra Prao is our favourite dish of that day! It is sauteed minced chicken with Thai Kra Prao leaf, this dish comes with steamed rice and also a sunny side up egg. If you don't like chicken, you could opt for beef with the same price. Pad Kra Prao is a simple dish yet it successfully made us crave for more!

Zest Bar Cafe, Glow Hotel, Penang
Pad Kra Prao – RM 18
Thai dessert is something you shouldn't be missed! Here we have Sang Kaya Fak Tong, it is steamed sweet pumpkin with custard, it goes well with both coconut milk and the sesame syrup. If you do read our previous post about Sang Kaya Fak Tong, then I would frankly tell you this one is way better than that ;)

Zest Bar Cafe, Glow Hotel, Penang
Sang Kaya Fak Tong – RM 7
Another Thai dessert that you could have in Zest Bar Cafe is Khanom Khao Mao, it is ripe banana wrapped with roasted sticky rice and grated coconut, then deep fried to crisp on the outer layer. It goes well with the coconut milk, and is definitely a better version of normal fried bananas, we both like it a lot!

Zest Bar Cafe, Glow Hotel, Penang
Khanom Khao Mao – RM 7
There were quite a number of bloggers being invited for food review that day, and this was our long dining table, spot me? (Henry Darling said I look like a ghost in this picture, really? o.o)

Zest Bar Cafe, Glow Hotel, Penang
Bloggers Food Review
So that's pretty much summed up the new Thai menu of Zest Bar Cafe! If you don't fancy Thai food, don't worry, they are also serving western cuisines such as sandwiches, burger and pasta. Furthermore, other than the Thai dishes mentioned above, there're still more options for you to choose from, please refer Zest Bar Cafe full menu below =)

The Islander @ Hotel Jen Penang

Henry Tan | 10:49 PM | | 1 Comment so far
Hotel Jen, formerly known as Traders Hotel, will commence The Islander's new menu by mid of April 2015! Thanks to the invitation from Annie & Ellie, we were fortunate to be the first to try out their food. They really adhere to the values of Hotel Jen, whereby they care about what really matters to guests! We enjoyed our night there!

The Islander - Bruschetta (RM17nett) - Actual Portion
Darling and I were starving after work, probably because we are used to take heavy dinner for weeks in a row thanks to all the recent food reviews. It's great that they served Bruschetta as starter to fill our stomach. The Islander's Bruschetta looks simple with red and yellow cherry tomatoes on top, but it is delightful right! A crispy bite on the Bruschetta released the aroma of olive oil and the sweetness of cherry tomatoes. I always prefer tomatoes that are not sour, spot-on!

The Islander - Arugula Salad (RM16nett) - Actual Portion

The Islander - Arugula Salad (RM16nett)
We wanted to be healthier (or I should say less guilty) by having some greens before proceed to heavy meals, so we tried the Arugula Salad as another starter as well. Arugula or usually known as rocket salad is always my favorite for its rich nutrition which includes vitamins and anti-oxidants that may benefit health. The sweet and vinegary taste of honey sesame dressing matched very well with the salad as it could cover the pungent and bitter taste of Arugula.

The Islander - Grilled Burger (RM20nett) - Actual Portion

Finally, we started our main course with a Grilled Burger with Vegetarian Patty. WAIT, WHAT?! Vegetarian Patty? Yup, vegetarian patty that made of couscous, potatoes, fresh herbs and spices seasoned with chef's special seasoning. According to the chef, there's no garlic and onion too. So for those vegetarian, you should really try out this! Anyway, we love their fries too!

The Islander @ Hotel Jen Penang
The Islander - Pan Fried Stuffed Aubergine (RM45nett) - Actual Portion
The Islander @ Hotel Jen Penang
The Islander - Pan Fried Stuffed Aubergine (RM45nett)
The Islander's Pan Fried Stuffed Aubergine caught our attention with the aroma of their smoky tomato sauce. Aubergine or egg plant may not be liked by many people, but certainly not me! Eggplant lovers must not want to miss it, especially when it is stuffed with couscous, cheese and breadcrumb, then soaked in the smoked tomato sauce. Vegetarian could order this as well too! Ohya, since eggplant is rich of iron, girls should eat more to replace back what you lose every month!

The Islander @ Hotel Jen Penang
The Islander - Chicken Rosmarino (RM53nett) - Actual Portion
Chicken Rosmarino is one of the best that I love the most in The Islander. Apart from the crispy boneless spring chicken, the balsamic pepper jus makes it very appetizing! The chef shared with us that the spring chicken is marinated with rosemary oil and balsamic vinegar, which could help to tenderize the chicken. Guess what, the Chicken Rosmarino was really tender and yet maintaining the juiciness. How thoughtful they are as it is super convenient for us to savor on the de-boned chicken! We both love it very much and will definitely go back again for more!

The Islander @ Hotel Jen Penang
The Islander - Baked Trapia (RM48nett) - Actual Portion
The Islander @ Hotel Jen Penang
The Islander - Baked Trapia (RM48nett)
Baked Trapia is served with fresh herbs, tomato coulis, olives and capers add the twist and make the dish flavorful. Well, for your information, the fish is a sustainable-sourced fish, which means that they will never extinct. (good for the mother earth huh?) Unfortunately, it isn't the liking of darling as she's afraid of fish, especially when they served it with the full body, head to tail of the fish. (What a weirdo! =p)

The Islander @ Hotel Jen Penang
The Islander - Lamb Osso Buco (RM58nett) - Actual Portion
The Islander @ Hotel Jen Penang
The Islander - Lamb Osso Buco (RM58nett)
They said "Save the best for last!" and Hotel Jen certainly did that for their main course! Both of us agreed that this has to be the best main course that we love the most. Lamb Osso Buco consists of the lamb shanks that braised with vegetables, white wine and broth. Chef Siva told us that each 400g of lamb shank is marinated with rosemary and other herbs so that it is not gamy. Lamb Osso Buco was braised long enough that the meat falling off the bone easily, tender yet melt-in-your-mouth texture. Pairing with their homemade mashed potato, Lamb Osso Buco tastes heavenly good! We would definitely recommend on this!

The Islander @ Hotel Jen Penang
The Islander - Tiramisu Pancake (RM20nett) - Actual Portion
Every complete good meal must ends with a dessert. We ended our full course with two! Starting with the Tiramisu Pancake, which is uniquely put together using sponge pancake, espresso, mascarpone, egg and cream with a twist of espresso butterscotch sauce. Unlike the use of typical ladyfinger, sponge pancake makes the Tiramisu more soft and fluffy yet not too thick in size. This dessert certainly "lift me up" after all the heavy meals! Another MUST-TRY to add into your list!

The Islander @ Hotel Jen Penang
The Islander - Jen's Signature (RM18nett) - Actual Portion
Your visit to Hotel Jen is not complete without trying Jen's Signature right? I bet you will never regret trying it either! Jen's Signature is actually like a mud pie that made of ice cream, chocolate and caramel sauce. Be it the sugar-rush effect or what, we were clearly thrilled by the richness of the chocolate and the firm and creamy texture of the ice cream. Totally not "jelak" at all even until you finish up! I could only say that the dessert totally end our night on a high note

The Islander @ Hotel Jen Penang
The Islander - Chef Sivasegaran (Executive Chef)
Lastly, I would like to thank Chef Sivasegaran for his wonderful delicacies. He has been in the line for 30 over years and I fully respect him for his friendliness and humbleness. We were truly amazed by his magic touch especially on his specialized Italian cuisines. So now, you know what to order if you happen to Hotel Jen! ;)

Go try it! =D

Patsa Thai Thai Shop @ Jalan Dato Keramat, Penang

Henry Tan | 12:24 PM | | 2 Comments so far
Hello people! I'm back with a very authentic Thai restaurant - Patsa Thai Thai Shop! It is located at Jalan Dato Keramat, one of the busiest road in Penang. Patsa Thai Thai specialized in Thai boat noodle, which is quite a hit recently with some different brands of boat noodle appearing mainly in KL and Penang. But guess what, this was my first time trying boat noodle! (Yep, I didn't get to try during my trip to Bangkok)

Boat Noodle at Patsa Thai Thai Shop!

Patsa Thai Thai Shop @ Jalan Dato Keramat, Penang Boat Noodle
Patsa Thai Thai Shop - Next to Chee Seng Brothers
According to the boss, the shop is named after his wife, Patsa from Thailand. And I supposed Thai Thai is coming from the Chinese word - "太太", which means wife. What a loving husband to name the shop after his wife right! If i ever open a laundry shop, I would named it "Dolyn Dhoby"! #ifyouknowwhatimean LOL

Patsa Thai Thai Shop @ Jalan Dato Keramat, Penang Boat Noodle
Patsa Thai Thai Shop - Just a stone's throw away from GAMA & Komtar
To be safe, you could park your car at the open car park behind Gama at Jalan Tongkah. The fees would be charged hourly. (Roughly less than 2 hours for RM1.80) Refer to the following map for the car park and location of the shop.

Patsa Thai Thai Shop - Car Park Location

Patsa Thai Thai Shop - Papaya Salty Egg Salad (RM20)
More commonly known as Som Tam in Thai, whereby it is consists of shredded unripe papaya. For the Papaya Salty Egg Salad in Patsa Thai Thai Shop, you could choose the level of spiciness by telling the boss from a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the hottest. We tried level 3, but I was already sweating like a pig! Besides, you could choose your Som Tam to be truly authentic with the addition of Fish Sauce as it tends to have a strong aroma that we might not be able to accept. With a little bit of each, a mouthful of appetizing opener could help to kick start your meal!

Patsa Thai Thai Shop - Some other sauces you could add
Patsa Thai Thai Shop @ Jalan Dato Keramat, Penang Boat Noodle
Patsa Thai Thai Shop - Matum Water (RM2)
The MUST-TRY drink in Patsa Thai Thai Shop would be their home-made Matum Water. This is another authentic Thai drink that made by hours of boiling the Matum, or known as dried bael fruit, then added with pandan to add on the aroma. You would feel weird on the first sip, which you could see from Jennifer's reaction! But after that it was quite acceptable, afterall it is considered as a health drink in Thailand.

Patsa Thai Thai Shop - Matum or Dried Bael Fruit
Patsa Thai Thai Shop @ Jalan Dato Keramat, Penang Boat Noodle
Patsa Thai Thai Shop - 12 Boat Noodle - GODLIKE!
Patsa Thai Thai mainly serves boat noodle which can be catogorized into 3 types of different noodles, namely Thai Kuey Tiew, Thai Mee Hoon and Thai Glass Noodle. While the ingredients could have the option of chicken slice meat, chicken ball, chicken drumstick and Thai classic herbs. Any combination above could be served in both dry or soup. One thing that is fun would be their "Patsa Record Book", whereby you get a different title depending on the number of boat noodle you ate.

Patsa Record Book:
1 till 5 bowls = Astalavista Baby
6 till 10 bowls = Eating Spree
11 till 15 bowls = Godlike
16 till 20 bowls = Patsa Mama

Patsa Thai Thai Shop @ Jalan Dato Keramat, Penang Boat Noodle
Patsa Thai Thai Shop - Glass Noodle Soup (RM1.90)
I get to try their glass noodle soup which is home-made as well according to the boss. Surprisingly, the glass noodle is different from Chinese transparent noodle. Patsa Thai Thai's glass noodle is yellow in color and made of flour and eggs. One thing that is noteworthy would be their soup and even meat ball, which they made it themselves using kampung chicken. Don't be surprised if you happened to chew on the soft bone as it was purposely added for extra texture.

Patsa Thai Thai Shop - Bee Hoon Dry (RM1.90)
They claimed that Patsa Thai Thai Shop is a pork and beef free restaurant. But, since their ingredients are mostly from Thailand, they couldn't able to get JAKIM to certified them as halal shop. Anyhow, there are still many Thai Muslims that went to their shop, as they believe in them as the boss and his wife are very devoted to their religion

Patsa Thai Thai Shop @ Jalan Dato Keramat, Penang Boat Noodle
Patsa Thai Thai Shop - Quite spacious and bright
Patsa Thai Thai Shop is quite spacious and bright. You might want to sit under the air-cond especially if you order a high spicy level som tam! Overall, I think it is worth for a try, especially if you are looking for very authentic Thai boat noodle and drink.

De' Corner Kitchen @ Jalan Tanjung Bungah, Penang

Henry Tan | 9:30 PM | | 2 Comments so far
As a Malaysian, I find that none of my friends doesn't like Tom Yam, do you feel that way too? We tend to revisit the same place over and over again just for the unexplainable feeling towards Tom Yam. But I always wish to enjoy my Tom Yam at a cleaner and comfy environment where I won't ended up looks like a mess after eating the spicy Tom Yam. Guess what? My wish has been granted by De' Corner Kitchen! It is a cozy cafe selling authentic Thai Tom Yam, cool huh =D

De' Corner Kitchen is literally a restaurant at the corner of the shop lot opposite of Viva Food Court. If you are heading to Batu Ferringhi, De' Corner Kitchen will be at your left, before the pet shop Tinkerbell's Pet Kingdom.

De' Corner Kitchen, Jalan Tanjung Bungah, Penang
De' Corner Kitchen
The idea of their Tom Yam is just the way I like, which I can pick the ingredients and control the portion according to my own preference. You can see all their ingredients are placed neatly and in a cleaner fashion (food hygiene is important kay =P).

De' Corner Kitchen, Jalan Tanjung Bungah, Penang
Variety of fresh ingredients
More choices of noodles can be found in De' Corner Kitchen, namely vermicelli, fusilli, instant noodle and flat noodle. We have tried all of them but we personally fancy vermicelli more, the texture is springy and it is able to absorb the Tom Yam soup well.

De' Corner Kitchen, Jalan Tanjung Bungah, Penang
Noodle options for Tom Yam
After we done picking the ingredients and noodles, our customized Tom Yam was cooked by the chef. Well, if you happened to come with your someone who doesn't eat Tom Yam (although this is rare), don't worry, they can opt for clear soup =D

De' Corner Kitchen, Jalan Tanjung Bungah, Penang
De' Corner Kitchen
Here you are, the irresistible Tom Yam Kung at De' Corner Kitchen! Their Tom Yam recipe is authentically from Thailand. The Tom Yam soup was just so flavourful and smooth, the sweet-sour-spicy Tom Yam soup has woken up my taste buds! And yea, I finished up the whole big bowl (slurrrp!) =D.

De' Corner Kitchen, Jalan Tanjung Bungah, Penang
De' Corner Kitchen - Tom Yam Kung
I can't eat spicy, but I just couldn't resist the yummy Tom Yam. So this was what I need, big bottle of drinking water and a bucket of ice! I called them my lifesaver :)

De' Corner Kitchen, Jalan Tanjung Bungah, Penang
Our Lifesaver - ice water
De' Corner Kitchen has numerous types of beverages ranging from coffee, milkshake, juice, smoothies, soft drinks and beer. Let me start with their signature drink - De' Corner Classic! The foam was firm, I can't tell what actually it is (the boss claimed that it is secret ingredient O.O) but it somehow tastes good; with very low coffee percentage, you can drink it without having to worry about insomnia =D

De' Corner Kitchen, Jalan Tanjung Bungah, Penang
De' Corner Classic - RM 11.90
Among all the drinks, Lemon & Lime Iced Blended was the most outstanding one! The sweet and sourish flavour was just so refreshing, perfect for hot days =D

De' Corner Kitchen, Jalan Tanjung Bungah, Penang
Left: Lemon & Lime Iced Blended - RM 10.90
Middle: Iced Coffee - RM 12.90
Right: Blackcurrant - RM 9.90
All the beverages of De' Corner Kitchen are beautifully presented! They look so lovely aren't they? I personally think their iced blended and smoothies series were too creamy to my liking (yea, I told you... I'm moving to a healthier lifestyle =P)

De' Corner Kitchen, Jalan Tanjung Bungah, Penang
Top: Vanilla Crushp - RM 13.90 / Chocolate Banana - RM 13.90
Down: Oreonese - RM 13.90 / Strawberry Smoothies - RM 13.50
The hot bitter espresso is topped with cold sweet vanilla cream, De' Corner Kitchen's Espresso Vanilla is the taste of bitter sweet, just like how people describe their memories... hot and cold like the relationships... hahahax

De' Corner Kitchen, Jalan Tanjung Bungah, Penang
Espresso Vanilla - RM 13.90
Please remember that their Tom Yam corner will only start taking order from 7 pm, unlike their western food, you can have it whenever the restaurant is open. De' Corner Kitchen has many kinds of their own style of western foods. With a fancy name Miss Nyonya, it is grilled chicken with Thai sweet sauce and Thai salad. The presentation of this dish is just as pretty as Miss Nyonya right? =D

De' Corner Kitchen, Jalan Tanjung Bungah, Penang
Miss Nyonya - RM 15.00
Corner Classic is grilled chicken served with creamy lemongrass sauce, mashed potatoes and salad. The unique flavour of the creamy lemongrass sauce, it worked great with the chicken. De' Corner Kitchen 's mashed potatoes was so delectable, we all love it so much.

De' Corner Kitchen, Jalan Tanjung Bungah, Penang
Corner Classic - RM 15.00
Black Pepper Jumbo is deep fried chicken served with black pepper sauce mashed potatoes and salad. The outer layer of chicken was so crunchy and the inside was juicy. However, I think the dish would be better if the outer layer of chicken was less thick.

De' Corner Kitchen, Jalan Tanjung Bungah, Penang
Black Pepper Jumbo - RM 15.00
Mr. Bombay is grilled chicken with Bombay sauce, mashed potatoes and salad. From the name itself, you can tell this is an Indian style dish. The hot and spicy taste of the Bombay sauce works well with the tender chicken and also the mashed potatoes.

De' Corner Kitchen, Jalan Tanjung Bungah, Penang
Mr. Bombay - RM 15.00
Unlike the regular Aglio Olio, with simple ingredients, De' Corner Kitchen's Spaghetti Aglio Olio is served with mushroom, onion, garlic, chicken ham, chicken slice and vegetables. The taste was different and it was actually quite spicy.

De' Corner Kitchen, Jalan Tanjung Bungah, Penang
Spaghetti Aglio Olio - RM 15.00
Our heavy dinner was ended with The Harvest, it is actually a parfait dessert which made with ice-cream, banana slice, cornflakes, almond, Oreo and mix oats. As for the ice-cream, you are free to choose from either Vanilla, Chocolate, Peppermint or Yam flavour.

De' Corner Kitchen, Jalan Tanjung Bungah, Penang
The Harvest - RM 12.90
Lastly, let me show you how was it actually like on that night! Everyone of us was so busy eating and nobody bothered to look at the camera (pity the cameraman Henry Darling =P), because the Tom Yam was too yummy!

De' Corner Kitchen, Jalan Tanjung Bungah, Penang
Food Tasting =D
I would say the combination of cafe with Tom Yam is a brilliant idea! The space of De' Corner Kitchen indoor dining area is limited, but we prefer their outdoor seating as it was windy and made us feel like eating in a spacious garden.

De' Corner Kitchen is a great place for Tom Yam lovers! Besides, they offer plenty of western foods and beverages choices, so even if you don't feel like eating, you could still just have a drink and chill there with your friends! =D
