Inch Southeast Asian Food & Bar @ Lebuh Muntri, Penang

Henry Tan | 10:13 PM | | 2 Comments so far
You might have been to all the latest cafes in Penang, but, I could assure that you have not been to this hidden gem in Penang - InchInch, abbreviation for IndoChina, is actually a Southeast Asian bar and restaurant, secluded in one of Georgetown heritage shop houses at Lebuh Muntri. (find out their secret dish at the end of the post =D)

Inch - The Hidden Gem in Georgetown

Inch Southeast Asian Food & Bar Lebuh Muntri, Penang, Hidden Gem in Penang
Inch - Secret hideout in Lebuh Muntri
Inch just started their business around a month ago and you probably would not know that there is a hidden treasure here. As it looks like just any other heritage shop houses from the outside, Inch would surely surprised you with their interior design from the point you entered the door. I just love how Inch remains all the heritage features such as the air vents, geometric-patterned floor tiles and even the embossed tiles below the windows.

Inch - Hidden inside a heritage shop house
The lighting, decorations and even seating at Inch are just too comfortable and relaxing. Combination of fans and air-conditioners certainly make the place much more cooling. Similar to some other heritage shop houses in Georgetown, Inch bar & restaurant has a narrow but long structure.

Inch - Cozy environment
Inch made their bar with a row of bar stools in front and dining tables at the back. One surely would not missed the opportunity to witness how the bartender mixed your drinks. A full rack of alcohols certainly impressed me too.

Inch - Bartender looks professional when he was preparing our drinks
As Inch is located in Lebuh Muntri, a street full of cafes and restaurants, the selection of food is very crucial to break through the competitions. So, personally I think that the concept of tapas style is quite suitable in the sense of product differentiation. Inch is definitely suitable for people who looking for a light meal and a place to relax.

Inch - Meal for 2
Perhaps the management of Inch Bar knows we love Thai food, majority of the dishes they served to us that night were Thai dishes. =D Okay, let me show you one by one! Yum Pla Muk Yang or grilled squid salad with cherry tomatoes, coriander, mint and sliced white onion were surely a refreshing dish. The squids were succulent, goes well with the spicy-sweet-sour sauce, it is a good start-off as our dinner.

Larb is a popular food served in the northeastern Thai. Larb Pet or chopped duck salad served with chilli pepper, shallots, coriander and smoked rice powder. We like this salad, especially the crispy duck skins. The portion is just nice and match well with alcohols. If you don't like duck, you could opt for their Larb Kai - chopped chicken salad.

I love this Neua Dat Diew! It is actually a Thai dish made with dried beef jerky marinated for 48 hours in black pepper, coriander seeds, cumin, white sesame, garlic and coriander roots. Wonder how it tastes like? It may look like seaweed in this picture, but it tasted like Chinese Bak Kwa (肉干), just the texture was much chewier and firmer. This is a must-try dish, if you take beef =D

Another Thai dish Som Tum, I'm sure most of you are quite familiar with this food. It is green papaya salad pounded with cherry tomatoes, string beans, peanuts, dried shrimps in lime fish sauce. Frankly, this Som Tum failed to impressed us, as it was not outstanding as compared to the rest of the salads we tried that night.

A SECRET Dish You Need to Try!

As a reward to our dear readers, I would like to disclose Inch's Secret Dish - Beef Soup! Yes, it's a SECRET! You will NOT be able to find it in their menu, (well, if you don't believe, you can check out their menu =P), you just need to tell them you want to order their "Secret Beef Soup". I tell you, this is absolutely a MUST-TRY! The soup itself was so luscious, plus the tender bites of beef in soup, this was perfect for the night! It's a full flavoredhearty soup that warmed me down to my toes.

Inch currently serving 2 types of desserts. We have tried several creme brulee elsewhere, but Inch serves a Southeast Asian version, they have Pandan Creme Brulee. The custard base is very creamy and rich, infused with pandan creating an unique flavour. The texture is comparably firm than what we ate elsewhere and the added pandan flavour complement the dessert well.

Sang-Khaya Fuak Tong is a Thai dessert, made with steamed pumpkin and duck egg with palm sugar custard. The sweetness of the palm sugar custard and egg slices has balanced up by the pumpkin delightfully. The texture of the steamed pumpkin was just right, with the smooth custard and egg slices, this dessert is certainly delectable for those who love pumpkin and is somehow acceptable for those who don't into pumpkin (yea, Me >.<).

Inch Bar is furnished with hanging light bulbs and candle lights, which beautifully created a romantic yet secretive vibe. The entire interior ambience of Inch Bar is so comfy that it successfully brought our mood to a much higher level after we stepped in the bar (we were so tired after a busy working day >.<).

Inch - Relaxing ambiance
Although the signboard of Inch Bar is not up yet, but you can still be able to find it easily, as it is located at the famous cafe lane, Lebuh Muntri, opposite of Camera Museum and Purrfect Cafe. Just to remember to open your eyes and look for the Tiffany blue colour shop, then you have got it right! =D

After visiting Inch Bar, our night has ended with a high note! =D Darling Gwendolyn fell in love with this place and saying will be back to Inch for her upcoming gatherings. We are anticipating for the opening of their sister restaurant Plates in front of Inch Bar too. This is absolutely a nice place to chill, you could be the first one to introduce this hidden treasure in Lebuh Muntri to your friends and family! =D

Elmural Cafe @ Lebuh Cintra, Penang

Henry Tan | 2:15 PM | | Be the first to comment!
Could you believe that there are like 90++ cafes in Penang Island itself and the number definitely still increasing. Well, Elmural Cafe is one of the latest cafe in Georgetown located at Lebuh Cintra, same row with the famous De Tai Tong Dim Sum (大東酒樓), easy to be found. You might want to make reservation before you visit to Elmural Cafe, as their cafe is not big and has only limited dining tables. El Mural actually means "the wall" in Spanish, they named the cafe in Spanish but Elmural Cafe is not selling any Spanish cuisine, their specialties are ribs and Italian gelatos.

The boss of Elmural Cafe, Anthony is so passionate about photo shooting, you can see the interior wall of Elmural Cafe is full of murals snapped by himself, which cleverly added the essence of Penang. So for those who wish to snap picture with murals you could snap it here too, it is pretty much the same feeling huh (hahax=P)

Okay, let us begin with the beverages first!

You can find tea, coffee, honey, chocolate as well as juice at Elmural Cafe! They have almost any types of drinks, sure you could get what you want to drink. They are so colourful aren't they? =)

Beverages
We opted for their Chocolate Cookie that night, if you like milk, you would like it, as the flavour of milk is strong. All their beverages are relatively not as sweet as what we usually drink, they are suitable to those who don't like sweet stuffs and more into healthy lifestyle. But we personally prefer thicker and stronger aroma of foods and beverages.

Have you heard about this? The Leftover Pork Salad? Interesting name huh. This is actually a salad made with assorted pork slice, greens, onions, cherry tomatoes, and mushrooms. They used Japanese sesame dressing for this salad, which is relatively lower calories as compared to mayonnaise and thousand island. (Yes, I'm on diet =P) As you could know from the name itself, their leftover might not be the same every day, so don't be surprised if your Leftover Pork Salad is different from mine ya. =D

Elmural Cafe's mushroom soup is served with toasted croutons, a drizzle of cream and a sprinkle of herbs on top. The soup is different from those made with instant soup powder, they generously added the mushrooms inside the soup, tiny bits and pieces of mushroom could still be chewed inside your mouth.

Soup of the Day - Mushroom Soup (RM 7.90)

Here comes Elmural Cafe's specialty - Pork Ribs!

All ribs are served with potato wedges and pick of the day greens. We got to try 2 types of Pork Ribs that night. One was baked with Hot Chipotle Sauce, another one was roasted with Cheesy Tops. Well, we love pork ribs and this is quite a hot topic recently, however, I personally think the ribs here were not marinated well or perhaps the sauces they chose are not strong enough to stand out. The ribs were baked to perfection, the side salads and potato wedges were good, but overall the dish was a bit dull to our liking.

Pork Ribs Baked with Hot Chipotle Sauce  (RM 33.90)
As a cheese lover, I'm so looking forward for their Pork Ribs roasted with Cheesy Tops, but it were kinda disappointing too. The cheese tops were pale and was apparently not enough for that portion of ribs. Also, since their potato wedges are quite delightful, it would be great if they provide us some dips, as the dish is kinda dry in overall. The ribs were well-roasted though.

Pork Shoulder serves with french fries and pick of the day greens. This dish is a must-try! We love their Brownie Sauce, and the pork shoulder was so juicy, tender and well-seasoned. Everything is good just the fries didn't complement the dish well, perhaps mashed potatoes would do a better role as the sides.

Elmural Cafe @ Lebuh Cintra, Penang
Pork Shoulder Chops with Brownie Sauce  (RM 23.90)
Like pork shoulder, their Lamb Chop is served with french fries and pick of the day greens too. Their mint sauce is much different from what we tried before, as they added yogurt in it, you won't taste the sourish of yogurt but rather refreshing minty creamy flavour well-matched with the Lamb Chop.

Elmural Cafe @ Lebuh Cintra, Penang
Lamb Chop with Yogurt Mint Sauce  (RM 22.70)
I would say Elmural Cafe's Gelato has undergone localisation, they have flavours like Kalamansi, Teh Tarik, Kopi O, and Chocolate Chili, each scoop sells at RM 7.80 and RM 13.90 for double scoops. Besides, they have 3 types of Gelato Dessert which are served with either espresso base, tea base or milk base. We simply like their Kalamansi Sorbet with Darjeeling Tea, it was simply refreshing.

Elmural Cafe @ Lebuh Cintra, Penang
Gelato Dessert  (RM 10.50)
Alright, the dinner was ended with pleasurable desserts. There is no added Government Tax and Service Charge at Elmural Cafe.

Idealite Restaurant - Lou Shang (风生水起)
Starting with the Lou Shang, a dish that must have in Chinese New Year celebration menu. Seriously, this is THE BEST Lou Shang that I have ever had! Look at the ingredients, all are fresh vegetables, fruits and nuts! Torch ginger gives the flavor, sea bird nest added in the soft chewy texture, anchovies that made of seaweed bean curd offers the crunchiness and plum sauce that made of brown rice enzyme bring the whole dish appetizing! Compare to the usual Lou Shang with those crispy rainbow colored thing, this is a lot healthier! I definitely prefer this over the normal one!

Looks real isn't it? In fact, most of it are made using different types of mushroom. Trust me, the "scallops", "muttons", "Pattaya salad" and "dumplings" are equally good to those non-vegetarian type!

Idealite Restaurant - Nourishing Soup (展翅高飞)
This is another dish that Idealite Wellness Restaurant surprised me with. I find it delicious despite all the ingredients are vegetarian. I just never thought that vegetarian could be that nice too! However, customers could choose with or without egg for this soup too while making the order.

Idealite Restaurant - Treasure Pot (招财纳福聚宝盆)
I believe most of you have tried the normal Phoon Choi countless time, but what about the vegetarian one? You have to try this! Even though without abalone, prawns, scallops, oysters, fish maws or sea cucumbers but their replacement are definitely equally good with the normal one.

Idealite Restaurant - Wealth & Prosperity Taro Fish (富贵有鱼)
Fish?! Looks like a real deep fried fish isn't it? Well, it's actually made of yam. The fish is fully handmade, crispy on the outside and soft filling of yam on the inside. Then topped with the sweet and sour gravy that makes it more appetizing!
